We all know One Big House absolutely loves Scaler, and after last Friday’s takeover at Strange Brew we thought we would write some words of appreciation.
What is it we like about Scaler?
They are consistently brilliant every time we’ve seen them. The effort they appear to put in is limitless, there’s no sense of going through the motions here.
There’s always a sense of a little bit more too – so last Friday’s showcase included two additional performances, a visual art presentation by Pneumatek and no less than DJ Daniel Avery as well. That’s top marks for the audience engagement/experience. As a consequence there’s always a cracking atmosphere, whether it’s on home territory in Bristol or at a festival (we had the honour of a great late night at Bluedot). We guarantee you’ll have a great time and it’ll be alongside an appreciative and knowledgeable crowd too. Always a plus when everyone is there to see the band because they are that good.
The One Big House reference points are historic as well as up to date so to our eyes Scaler take the best parts of Killing Joke and New Order through Nine Inch Nails and Prodigy to sit very comfortably at the top of the present day pile with Working Mens Club and Mandy,Indiana. That’s some pretty heavyweight pedigree and bear in my mind alongside that all the songs are top quality, there’s no filler. Quite literally there isn’t a duff song that Scaler perform.
No band is unique, but this band push boundaries – the mix of dance-based rhythms and rock style guitar give us fresh sounding floor fillers as well as toe tapping moments.
