There’s a lot to be excited about in the universe of Knives. And how could you fail to be excited. The LP, ‘Glitter’, is outstanding and judging by this sold out Thekla gig the band are in top form.
It’s been a slow build for these Knives (certainly we’ve seen them at least half a dozen times). So however you want to measure their present level of success, they have earned it. And if, as we sensed they are enjoying the moment and limelight, they have earned that too.
The LP was played in full (and in track order if you feel the need to make notes). It’s a swirl of guitar and sax with a liberal slice of angst. It’s a moshpit, it’s a stagedive, it’s a cracking way to enjoy a night out. Take the wonderful Rhinestone Cowboy from the LP. Understated screaming guitar, the trademark bass, duelling vocals. It’s a huge noise, it’s a run up and jump, it’s the sound of community and friendship, look after each other.
The encore was the golden oldies, ‘the classics’ as lead singer Jay said. And from our viewpoint, ‘Doppelganger’ and ‘Headcase’ certainly are two classics. Both able to stand alongside and above the work of more established and successful bands. A sold out Thekla rocked on its moorings. Quite literally shook. And why? That’s the present day power of Knives.
