If we were fortunate enough to be free to get to a lunchtime gig, and then fortunate enough that the lunchtime gig is the Molotovs, then undoubtedly, it’s all good news! This was a fantastic way to spend a few hours on a Thursday lunchtime.
It does appear that the ‘noise’ around this band is fully justified. Amazing to think this brother and sister are both less than 20 years old. There’s clearly a fire in them to perform as this had the feel of a proper set even though it was an instore in the middle of the day. They approached this acoustic set with vigour and with some swagger. Clearly there is a lot of stage presence and no lack of confidence with both Matthew and Issey. There were people travelling from Cardiff and Dorset to be here, and certainly no journey was a wasted one.
Opening with the debut single ‘More, More, More’ and quickly following on with recently released ‘Today’s Gonna Be Our Day’, we heard versions of most, if not all the future debut LP ‘Wasted Youth’. Punchy guitars and dual vocals on most songs, some hooks and catchy choruses too; we particularly liked ‘Geraldine’ and ‘Popstar’. Maybe history will eventually say something different but at this point in their career they are sitting comfortably as a 2020s branch of the classic British pop family tree. Shades of Jamie T, Blur and the late 70s mod revival. There was even a good cover of the Housemartins ‘Happy Hour’ to finish.
Of course, we are now itching to see them plugged in and with a drummer. Hopefully add in some jumping around type excitement for good measure. The LP sounds promising, and the opening singles are strong. Let’s hope the future remains bright for these young stars, we see no reason why it won’t be. Get out there and support them!
