Lawn Chair – The Lanes – 20 Sep

A Saturday night and The Lanes was jumping. A new LP just out and well into their tour, Lawn Chair delivered a blistering set of guitar based rock and indie. From Germany, but influenced by Devo, Parquet Courts and Talking Heads, this is a band with a strong future.

Changes of pace, some subtle keyboards, highs and lows, it was all here in this multi-genre feast. From the LP “You Want It! You Got It”, check out the folk and acoustic sensibilities of “29 Palms” and then the guitar phasing and riffing on crowd favourite “Waste Your Potential!” to see the vast difference in what this band can produce.

The lead singer of Lawn Chair is called Claudia. As a front person, she produced everything you would want. Firstly, she didn’t like to restrict herself to the stage, we know the stage at The Lanes isn’t massive, but her trips off the stage got the crowd involved. There’s a speaker stack and a bar, and tables all around the back of the performance area. Claudia climbed on them all, making full use of the available space. In terms of exuberance, Claudia scored a ten!

It was a windy night outside The Lanes, but there was a force of nature inside the venue as well. Worth a listen and definitely worth checking out when Lawn Chair return to the UK next time.
