Slow Crush – The Fleece – 16 Oct

Just when you thought you’d seen most popular cultural musical genres, up pops a bit of a surprise. And it was a pleasant surprise! A mix of dreampop, or shoegaze if you prefer, with plenty of metal riffing led us to somewhere we weren’t expecting. Difficult to categorize but not difficult to enjoy.

We’d really enjoyed the Slow Crush LP “Thirst” and had played some tracks from it on our Dandelion Radio show, namely ‘While You Dream Vividly’ and ‘Covet’, both of which are a melodic, guitar driven noise, overlaid with a great vocal. This show at the wonderful Fleece was very much in the same vein, with loud feedback and guitars that are right in your face. Add in a pretty decent light show that dazzled and twisted and turned in a dramatic manner. Plus, in all honesty, too much dry ice (couldn’t see the stage at times even though it was about five meters in front) and this had a great feel and am autumnal atmosphere.

This was so wonderfully multi genre that someone remarked it was ‘shoegaze with heavy metal toecaps’ which is an apt description. We are unsure of what media coverage this band had previously received but there were a lot of people at this gig expecting more metal sounds than they probably heard. Regardless, this was a lush and multi-layered dreamy pop set with some excellent heavy metal guitar stylings. Buy the LP and go see this band!
