Just Mustard – Rough Trade – 27 Oct

A dark and rainy, post clock-change, Monday night in October wouldn’t normally be the ideal scenario to get the pulse racing. But Rough Trade in Bristol does the small gigs pretty well, especially when its packed, and our spirits and mood were lifted by an exciting set from Just Mustard.

Vinyl or CD included in your entry price and a band signing to follow the live performance, this was always going to be brilliant. There was a buzz about this band before they took to the stage and they certainly didn’t disappoint. The Irish five piece gave us their own mix of “shoegaze” and “krautrock” fusion that delighted an enthusiastic and loyal crowd.

Theres a pulsating bass, plenty of reverb guitars and ample layered synth, wrapped in velvet glove vocals gaving a dark haunting almost “Scandi” drama vibe. If that is a look they are after, then they have mastered it!

The band played mainly tracks from their recently released new album including the singles  ‘Pollyanna’, ‘Endless Deathless’ and the wonderful title track ‘We were Just here’. A night to remember, future dark Mondays won’t seem the same again.  If you fancy checking them out, and we recommend you do,  they’re playing at the Thekla 27th April.
