Looking to share great music, bands and help local venues

Dry Cleaning – Strange Brew – 13 Jan

When your children or your children’s children put together a playlist of 2020s alternative music, then this band deserve their spot in that playlist. Dry Cleaning are as much part of the early and mid-2020’s musical landscape as Idles and Fontaines DC.  But let’s not get too reflective before it’s time to do so. This sold out show at the wonderful Strange Brew in Bristol, was to celebrate the release of the new and third Dry Cleaning LP “Secret Love”.

We weren’t keeping score, but it seemed like we were treated to the whole of the new LP plus the older stand outs like ‘Scratchcard Lanyard’ and ‘Gary Ashby’. It’s been a few years since the previous LP ‘Stumpwork’. There is a slightly rockier sound to most of the new tracks, supported by a fifth band member Josh on this occasion, as well as Florence doing a bit more singing rather than her trademark “spoken word”.

The band was certainly in fine form, once again we were struck by how good Tom’s guitar work is and Lewis on bass certainly looks like a musician who is loving every moment of being on stage. Florence isn’t giving much away with body language and lets Tom do most of the talking between songs. That said, she gives away lots with the lyrics, some of which are clearly deeply personal. This is where those combined attributes and characteristics give this band a unique personality, and it’s deeply engaging and attractive.

The new single ‘Joy’ is exactly that, and the new LP is tremendous, we particularly like “Rocks “and “Let Me Grow and You’ll See the Fruit “. They are playing gigs to support the new LP, so make sure you get along and check them out!
