Looking to share great music, bands and help local venues

My First Time – The Croft – 28 Apr

As we sat after the gig, having a beer or two in the Croft, discussing if there was anything more My First Time could do to achieve world domination (if they wanted it), the answer was to repeat this performance level every night (maybe record it and release it)! Without a doubt the best gig we’ve been to this year, and in an extremely long list of previously seen bands, certainly up there with the best. That’s high, high praise but it’s deserved. This was an unbelievable night!

Straight in with one of the favourites “Brand New”, this song builds and teases, before reaching its intense peak. If this is the title track for the night, it’s worthy of that status, a mammoth of a song. There’s no let up in the pace – through “Workwear”, “Wind Up Merchant” and onto the slow respite of “The Kids Are” but then, as Isaac says it’s back to the classics.

Has there ever been a band that has released so many great singles at the start of their career? And Isaac was right, the classics keep on coming, into “Sippy Cup”, “Bodybag” and our personal favourite “Celebrity” (during which this writer was serenaded). And there’s even time for a chaotic dance to “Pictures of Health”, a real floorfilling, no nonsense slice of supercharged pop.

And then it’s all over, and we adjourn to the bar, buzzing and fizzing from what we’ve just witnessed. We left our My First Time branded glasses on the table, but regardless, we take away memories of a superb performance from one of the truly great bands of this era.
